Iraqi forces repel IS attack in western Iraq

Iraqi security forces on Wednesday repelled an attack by Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq's western province of Anbar, the Iraqi military said.

The attack took place in the morning when dozens of IS militants attacked the outposts of the security forces near the Lake of Habbaniyah in south of the provincial capital city of Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, the media office of the Joint Operation Command (JOC) said in a statement.

The attackers detonated two car bombs at a bridge, known as Chinese Bridge, but the troops foiled the attack and killed most of the attackers, the JOC said.

The Iraq's Colonel Ahmed al-Dulaimi told Xinhua, the police forces, army and paramilitary tribal fighters repelled the attack and killed some 15 militants, while 17 of the security forces were wounded by the clashes.

The attack came as the Iraqi security forces are fighting to free the IS-held cities of Aana, Rawa and al-Qaim near the border with neighboring Syria.
