Turkey suspends 3 Iraqi Kurdish TV channels from broadcasting
Turkey's top media watchdog on Monday removed three northern Iraq-based TV channels from its satellite broadcasting as a response to the Kurdish independence referendum held earlier, local media reported.
The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) announced to suspend three Kurdish news channels from its satellite service TurkSat.
The three channels, namely the Rudaw TV, K24 TV and Waar TV, are known as affiliated with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq.
The channels have called some parts of southeastern and eastern Turkey as "northern Kurdistan" in their programs, which is unacceptable in the country, an official from RTUK was quoted by state-run Anadolu Agency as saying.
RTUK did not grant permits of broadcasting for the three channels, instead they were broadcasting with the license obtained from Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq.
If the channels do not correct the violations mentioned above in 48 hours, their broadcast will be cut, the official warned.
The decision came on the same day when Iraqi Kurds in the Kurdish autonomous region and other disputed territories voted for a referendum on whether to break away from Baghdad.
Ankara called the independent referendum "null and void" and warned to take "every measure" if the Kurdish referendum endangered Turkey's national security.
The newly-launched Rudaw TV channel is a Kurdish news channel that broadcasts to the Middle East and Europe.
