Bassiouni wins human rights post.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has approved the appointment of Cherif Bassiouni, a law professor at DePaul University in Chicago, as an independent expert on human rights in Afghanistan.

Bassiouni, an Egyptian, campaigned in the 1990s to establish the International Criminal Court and in 1993 he chaired the UN Commission investigating human rights violations in the former Yugoslavia.

Acting UN Human Rights Commissioner Bertrand Ramcharan announced his appointment following last year's decision by the Commission on Human Rights to name an expert to promote human rights in Afghanistan.

Bassiouni's primary job will be to develop, in collaboration with Afghanistan's transitional government and the UN high commissioner, a program of services to ensure the respect and protection of human rights in the country. He will report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan in an effort to prevent violations.

Bassiouni is also president of the Chicago-based International Human Rights Law Institute; of the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences in Siracusa, Italy; and of the International Association of Penal Law in Paris.
