US to donate 6.576 Humvee vehicles to Afghan forces
An Indiana-based US firm has received a $45.9 million contract for the procurement of 6,576 high mobility multipurpose-wheeled vehicles to hand over to the Afghan national defense and security forces. The contract was announced on Thursday by the Department of Defense.
A news item on the manufacturer's website, quoting the US Department of Defense, indicated the AM General was expected to complete the manufacturing work by Aug. 31, 2018.
According to the announcement by the Department of Defense, the contract falls under foreign military sales and provides the expanded capacity M115 HMMWV.
The M115 HMMWV is a four-wheeled vehicle designed as carrier for troops and weapons, with modern variants capable of receiving a variety of armor upgrades and including a ring-turret for medium and heavy weapons such as machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank weapons.
Other versions have been produced to serve as light cargo carriers, ambulances and command-and-control vehicles. It has served as the standard utility vehicle for the US military for decades and has been widely exported.
