Key Taliban leader among 8 killed in northern Afghan airstrike
Eight Taliban militants, including an insurgents' key leader, were killed in an airstrike in Afghanistan's northern province of Kunduz on Monday, a local police official said Tuesday.
"The airstrike took place late on Monday evening in Sajani Payan area of the restive Chahar Dara district after NATO-led forces bombed a militants' key stronghold. According to initial information eight Taliban were killed and many others went missing," provincial police spokesman Inamuddin Rahmani told Xinhua.
Among the killed militants was a notorious Taliban leader, Qari Shahzada, a masked man who led a group of Taliban known as Taliban Commando that regularly attacks security forces in Kunduz.
The bombing was so heavy that it could be heard from long distance, breaking the windowpanes of some houses in nearby villages, said the spokesman.
A handful of weapons and ammunition were also destroyed in the attack.
The Taliban had not made immediate comment on the incident.
Fighting has escalated in Afghanistan as the Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where Taliban have been recruiting from among the youth.
