The ministry of interior confirmed the casualty toll and said many of the victims were policemen

The Ministry of Interior has confirmed that 14 people were killed and at least 60 wounded in Sunday's explosion outside the gate of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul city shortly after First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum’s convoy left the area.

Officials said the explosion happened close to the circle outside the airport’s entrance.

The explosion happened just before 5pm, immediately after Dostum's convoy drove past.

The convoy was not however affected.

Dostum arrived back in Kabul at 4.30pm and at 4.40pm he disembarked from the plane and was immediately ushered into a waiting armored vehicle.

Shortly before 5pm he drove out of the airport compound.

Under tight security Dostum’s convoy left the airport and exited through the main gate where dozens of people had gathered to welcome him home.

Dostum’s convoy, which was not affected, made the trip from the airport to the first vice president’s office in only a few minutes as all roads were closed to traffic.

A TOLOnews journalist at the scene reported at least 10 ambulances arrived in the area and transferred casualties to hospital.

Arriving at his office, shortly after 5pm, Dostum was welcomed by officials and supporters and delivered a speach.
