Ukraine president to visit Czechia on Oswiecim Red Army liberation anniversary
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accepted an invitation from Czech counterpart Milos Zeman to visit Czech Republic's capital Prague in January 2015, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin told Czech television.
"For us the memory about the holocaust is holy and the president [Poroshenko] will visit Prague on the occasion of this landmark and tragic event," Klimkin said.
Zeman invited the heads of state from the anti-Hitler coalition states of Britain, Russia, the United States and France to visit Prague for an international forum dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Red Army's liberation of Nazi concentration camp Oswiecim, Czech presidential spokesperson Jiri Ovcacek said last Tuesday.
No other leaders of the allied states accepted invitations for the event yet, Czech Foreign Ministry said.
Nazi concentration camp Terezin was set up in November 1941 north of Prague. As many as 33 thousand prisoners were killed in this death camp, another 88 thousand were sent to Oswiecim gas chambers. Soviet troops have liberated Terezin on May 9, 1945.
