Russian author Daniil Granin meets German political leaders in Bundestag

The prominent Russian author Daniil Granin, who is currently in Berlin at the invitation of the German Bundestag, has met with representatives from the German government on Monday, January 27, the annual day of commemoration for the victims of National Socialism.

In the historic plenary chamber of the Reichstag Building in Berlin, Granin talked with German President Joachim Gauck, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert, President of the Bundesrat Stephan Weil and President of the Federal Constitutional Court Andreas Vosskuhle.

All of them will take part in the German Bundestag's Ceremony of Remembrance marking the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism.

The Ceremony of Remembrance at the Bundestag has been held annually in the plenary chamber of the Reichstag Building since 1996 on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Red Army on January 27, 1945.

This year also commemorates the victims of the German Wehrmacht's siege of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), which ended 70 years ago on January 27, 1944, one year before the liberation of Auschwitz, and claimed the lives of over one million civilians.

The 95-year-old writer, who is a survivor of the siege of Leningrad, will be the guest speaker in this year's commemorative ceremony and will address the Bundestag on this subject.

The author's meeting with German political leaders was held behind closed doors, and there were no statements made after it.

Following the Ceremony of Remembrance, Granin will participate in the international youth encounter, which is held each year in remembrance of the victims of National Socialism. The subject of this year's youth encounter is the siege of Leningrad and its importance for the present and the future.
