Putin: Whole world should remember about besieged Leningrad feat in fight against fascism

The whole world should remember about the feat of Soviet people and residents of the then besieged Leningrad and human victims, which people suffered for the sake of common victory over fascism, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated here on Monday.

"Our duty is that nothing will be ever forgotten, this is mostly important. So that nothing will be lost and so that people in our country and abroad will remember about this tragedy, valor and heroism of Soviet people and Leningraders," the president said at a meeting with war veterans of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

He noted that all should be done "so that nothing like that will recur in the life of different peoples in the world anymore."

Putin recalled that 360,000 civilians died in the city of Leningrad for four months alone from the end of 1941 up to the beginning of 1942. Great Britain had sustained almost the same casualties for the whole Second World War.

"Just imagine this difference in casualties between those brought on the altar of common victory by Soviet people and other countries in the world," the president said.
