An Open Letter to the Board of The Oxford Union
10 May 2019
Dear Members of the Board of The Oxford Union,
RE: Oxford Union events on Catalonia
The undersigned are members of the Foro de Profesores, an informal association of 240 University professors and other professionals committed to the defence of liberal democracy in Spain. We understand that Mr Carles Puigdemont has been invited to address your members on the 28th of May 2019.
We welcome your interest in Spanish affairs, even if we deeply regret that the Oxford Union seems to invite only nationalist Catalan leaders: Mr Artur Mas in 2017 and now Mr Puigdemont. As you probably know, Mr Puigdemont is a fugitive from justice, having fled the country after the public attorney office took him to the Supreme Court on charges equivalent to embezzlement of public funds, obstruction of justice, and employment of violence in the declaration of the independence of a Spanish region against the Spanish Constitution. You may not be aware that the regional police force of Catalonia counts with 18,000 members. His constitutional rights, including that of free speech, are of course unaffected during the course of the proceedings.
We also regret that Mr Puigdemont is presented in advertisements for the event as 'Head of the Catalonian Resistance'. Mr Puigdemont's unilateral strategy has created deep divisions within Catalan society and has greatly damaged the Catalan social fabric and economy, while also increasing deep structural inequalities in Catalonia. In the past general elections in Spain--28th April 2019--Mr. Puigdemont political party JxC was the 4th most voted political force in Catalonia with 12,05% of the ballots. The other pro-secession party, ERC, gathered 24,59% of the ballots. Thus, both secessionist parties togethers amounted to 36,64% of the ballots. It is therefore inaccurate and tendentious to present him as representing a 'Catalonian resistance'; if there is such a thing, it is not a resistance against Spain but against one half of Catalonia.
We consequently write to you to politely offer ourselves, and our expertise, for any presentations or debates that you may wish to hold on these issues. The Foro de Profesores includes prominent experts in law, economy, sociology, history, philosophy, education, modern languages, and all other aspects of Catalonia and its politics. Some amongst our most concerned members include academics with Oxbridge credentials: graduates and doctorates of the universities; as well as others who regularly visit and exchange scholarly work with Oxbridge academics.
The nationalist movement in Catalonia is very well funded, while ours is a civil association with no funding whatsoever. Nevertheless, we hope our willingness and ability to defend Spain's most progressive constitutional and legal order in centuries will not be dismissed or ignored. We are convinced that Oxford Union audiences will find really useful the information we offer on Spanish affairs. We trust that Oxford Union will be keen to enhance access to this information and to a balanced account of events.
We look forward to hearing from you.
