Greek PM eyes debt deal by weekend
A deal to tackle the Greek debt crisis should be sealed by the end of this week, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Tuesday night after a eurozone summit in Brussels.
"Discussion was conducted in a positive climate. Our goal is to conclude the process successfully by the end of this week," he told reporters in Brussels.
The Greek premier said that Greece tabled its proposals on Tuesday, seeking a "socially fair and economically viable agreement for Greece and the euro zone."
He said he was "happy that all sides understand that the problem was not Greek only, but a European problem."
European Council President Donald Tusk told a press conference in Brussels after Tuesday's summit that the additional EU summit set for the upcoming Sunday will be the final deadline for the Greek issue. He said Greek proposals including detailed reform plan should be presented by Thursday at the latest.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that Grexit cannot be ruled out though he doesn't want Greece to leave the eurozone. He said the EU has already "a Grexit scenario prepared in detail."
According to the Greek side, Greece now seeks a short term solution this month to immediately restore liquidity in the country where banks were closed and capital controls were introduced since June 29, and then a final comprehensive agreement.
