Russia sends five helicopters for UN mission fighting Ebola in Sierra Leone
Russia has sent to Sierra Leone five civilian helicopters for the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), Russia's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Pyotr Ilyichev, said.
Speaking at the UN Security Council session, Ilyichev said Russia is taking an active part in the international effort to combat the deadly Ebola virus outbreak. "Today, our total assistance is estimated at around $20 million," he said.
Russia is actively involved in the mission's logistics activities. "In October, upon the request of the mission, we delivered five civilian helicopters to Sierra Leone," the diplomat said.
Moscow has also offered to deliver "free of charge" two planes of air medical service equipped with special capsules for transporting infected persons, Ilyichev added.
Last Sunday, Russia sent a military field hospital and over 150 tons of medical and special equipment to Guinea. "The hospital allows not only simultaneous accommodation and treatment of 200 people, infected with highly hazardous virus diseases, but also an autonomous operation during the quarantine," he said.
The death toll from the current Ebola outbreak has reached 5,459, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. So far, over 15,000 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease have been reported in six affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Spain, and the United States of America) and two previously affected countries (Nigeria, Senegal).
