EU Commission Recognises COVID-19 Certificates of San Marino & Vatican City as Equivalent to Those Issued by EU Countries
For the purpose of facilitating free movement within the European Union, the EU Commission has announced that COVID-19 Certificates issued by the authorities of Vatican City State and San Marino will now be recognised as equivalent to those issued by the EU Member States.
In a press release issued by the Commission, it is explained that both countries are now effectively connected to the EUDCC gateway, and Coronavirus certificates issued by the Vatican City State and San Marino will be recognised in the EU under the same conditions applied for the EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
"COVID-19 vaccination certificates issued by the Vatican City State/San Marino in accordance with the "VA-EUDCC-GW" system shall, for the purpose of facilitating the right of free movement within the Union, be treated as equivalent to those issued in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2021/953," the Commission's directive reads.
This means that all citizens of Vatican City State and San Marino who hold a vaccination certificate, a negative COVID-19 test result, or a certificate of recovery from the disease will be subject to the same rules as European citizens who hold an EU COVID Certificate.
Commenting on the connecting of the two countries to the gateway, EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said that he is delighted to see that more countries are implementing a system that is based on the EUDCC.
"We are taking active steps in recognising certificates issued by other third countries. But, they must be interoperable with the EU framework and allow for the verification of their authenticity, validity, and integrity," Reynders added.
However, thousands of citizens of San Marino who have been vaccinated with the Russian Sputnik V vaccine may be unable to use their certificates to enter Italy as the latter's authorities have announced that they do not accept such proof of immunity.
The EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate has been established by the European Union in order to facilitate travel within the bloc and is characterised by these main features:
Provided in digital or paper format
A single-page document
Contains a unique QR code
Free of charge
Provided in English and national language of the issuing country
Safe and secure
Recognised in all EU countries- Advertisement -
In addition, the certificate also includes personal information on the holder, such as name and surname, date of birth, and the issuing country.
For vaccinated persons, the certificate includes the name of the vaccine, the manufacturer, the number of received doses, and vaccination date(s).
The certificate issued to travellers who have tested negative contains the type of used test date and testing time, the name of the testing centre, and the result.
As for those who have recovered from the virus, the certificate shows the date of the positive test result, the name of the issue, the date of issuance, and the validity period.
