No proposals from Russia on creating BRICS Parliamentary Assembly -- lawmaker
Russia did not offer the participants in the First BRICS Parliamentary Forum held earlier in the day to establish the BRICS Parliamentary Assembly, Chairman of the State Duma International Affairs Committee Alexey Pushkov told TASS on Monday.
"I must say that the information on the creation of the BRICS Inter-parliamentary Assembly proposed by Russia spread by some media outlets is not factually correct," the parliamentarian said.
According to Pushkov, "the Russian side didn't come up with such offer, therefore no one spoke against this proposal, since it wasn't formulated by any of the participants in the forum." "Everyone said work at the level of active inter-parliamentary cooperation had to be continued, in particular, building on the success achieved at the First BRICS Forum," the lawmaker said.
Regarding the key points of the final declaration adopted by the forum, Pushkov noted that the document stressed, "BRICS assigns the task of turning into an international mechanism for consultations and cooperation on the key issues of global politics and economy." "Which means that BRICS is not just a forum for exchanging views… the participants in the forum came to the conclusion that the task is to turn BRICS into the international mechanism of cooperation on key issues. This is a new important element in the development of the organization's activities," he added.
The First BRICS Parliamentary Forum was held in Moscow on Monday. Taking part in it were delegations from the organization's member countries. The meeting resulted in the adoption of the final document. The lawmakers of the BRICS members pointed to the importance of an all-embracing reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council, and the importance of preserving the results of the Victory in World War Two.
