Soldier killed, 2 wounded in clash with Abu Sayyaf

A government soldier was killed and two others were wounded after fierce clashes on Monday with suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen in Tipo-Tipo town in Basilan.

The fighting broke out in Barangay Badja in Tipo-Tipo, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf and the larger Moro Islamic Liberation Front which forged an interim peace deal with the government in 2014.

The encounters occurred just hours after an improvised explosive device was detonated in Barangay Kulaybato in Lamitan City. But there were no reported casualties in the suspected Abu Sayyaf bombing.

The victims were members of the Army's 74th Infantry Battalion that has been deployed in the province to fight the bandits, blamed by authorities for the spate of terrorism and kidnappings for ransom in the troubled region.

However, authorities did not reveal the identity of the fatality and the wounded soldiers.

The Western Mindanao Command and the Philippine Army also did not release any information about the outbreak of violence in Basilan, several nautical miles south of Zamboanga City.
