Austrian chancellor speaks against new anti-Russian sanctions

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann spoke on Tuesday against the imposition of new anti-Russian sanctions over Moscow's position on the situation in Ukraine.

Faymann made the statement to journalists after a government meeting.

He said Vienna believes the negotiating process to settle the situation in Ukraine is proceeding "in the right way", the Austria Press Agency (APA) reported.

Faymann underlined that stress should be laid on talks.

The West led by the United States subjected Russia to sanctions, including visa bans, asset freezes and sectoral restrictions, following Crimea's incorporation by Russia in March after a coup in Ukraine in February and the start of clashes in Ukraine's southeast that the West claimed Moscow was involved in despite Russia's repeated denials.

In response, Russia imposed on August 6 a one-year ban on imports of beef, pork, poultry, fish, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and dairy products from Australia, Canada, the EU, the United States and Norway.
