Russian Security Council has not discussed nationalization of web domains -- official

The Russian Security Council has not discussed nationalization of web domains, Russian presidential aide Igor Shchyogolev said Wednesday.

"Nationalization of domains was not discussed as they are not our property," he told journalists.

Shchyogolev admitted that recent web security trainings showed that the Russian segment of the internet is vulnerable. He said that in order to solve the problem, clear rules of the game on the international arena and a convention regulating relations in the sphere are required.

Organizational and engineering measures to protect internet users are also required.

"We need to ensure that resources which are significant for our country's nationals keep working in any conditions," the presidential aide said.

The discussion is taking place amid an unprecedented sanctions pressure on Russia on the part of Western nations.

Russia came under Western sanctions, originally visa bans and asset freezes, for incorporation of Crimea in mid-March after a coup in Ukraine in February. Later, Western claims that Russia is taking part in hostilities in southeast Ukraine, which Moscow has repeatedly denied, resulted in more serious, sectoral, restrictions.
