Russian PM: There are plans on Gazprom investing in Kyrgyzstan's gas transmission system

There are serious plans on Gazprom's investment in Kyrgyzstan's gas transmission system, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said during the talks between Russia and Kyrgyzstan headed by premiers of the countries on Monday.

"Currently, there are serious plans to develop the republic's natural gas demand," Medvedev said, adding that the Russian gas giant has "plans to invest in gas transmission and gas-distributing areas."

According to Medvedev, the issue is very important for the country's development and for implementation of joint projects in the economic fields.

"There is a whole range of other issues, including those related to the Eurasian cooperation, so let's discuss them within our today's talks," the Russian prime minister added.

Russia, Kyrgyzstan have to take efforts to reverse trend of slumping trade turnover

Medvedev has also stressed that Russia and Kyrgyzstan have to take effort to reverse the trend of slumping trade turnover.

"The bilateral trade has always been quite high but (now) we're seeing a decline amid various market trends. And our today's task is to take efforts to restore it and reverse the trend from negative to positive," he said.

According to Medvedev, Russia has traditionally been Kyrgyzstan's leading economic partner. "The two countries need to compare notes, look at prospects, particularly given the fact that the two economies are facing certain negative trends," Russian PM said, adding though that there are positive trends in trade relations between the partners as well, including supplies of food and agricultural stuffs from Kyrgyzstan.

"This can be explained as a whole range of food suppliers from the so-called sanctioned countries do not do this (supply products), which on the other hand creates additional options for our partners," Medvedev said.

Kyrgyzstan's national producers will also see more opportunities for cooperation with Russia as the country's economy adjusts to working within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), he said.

Cooperation with Russia is priority for Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Sooronbai Zheenbekov in his turn noted that Cooperation with Russia is of great importance to Kyrgyzstan.

"I would like to note the steady development of foreign trade relations." He added that the inflow of direct investment from Russia to Kyrgyzstan had grown significantly recently, which attests to "increased confidence of Russian investors."

"We also attach great importance to the implementation of the Kyrgyz-Russian agreements in the energy sector. Delivery of oil and oil products to Kyrgyzstan is an extremely important issue for us," Zheenbekov said. He also thanked the Russian side for resolving the issue of natural gas supplies to Kyrgyzstan, which was settled "in close cooperation with Gazprom."

He also expressed gratitude to Russia for timely compliance with obligations on forming the authorized capital of the Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund.

He went on to say that the military-technical cooperation is a major area of cooperation between the two countries. "Beyond all doubt, Russia plays a dominant role in countering the threats posed by international terrorism, religious extremism and drug trafficking in the region and the entire world," the Kyrgyz prime minister said.

Zheenbekov added that Kyrgyzstan considered the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) "the most important element of the modern security system."

Medvedev arrived in Bishkek for an official visit earlier on Monday.
