Euronews reprimands reporter for screenshot of Lavrov's fake account

The leadership of Euronews international news channel has given an admonition to the journalist, who posted a nonexistent Twitter account of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Vice-President of Euronews Supervisory Board Pyotr Fedorov told Govorit Moskva radio station on Tuesday.

"She (the journalist), as the editor-in-chief explained to me, is simply so advanced in years that she is not used to seeing fake reports on the Internet," he said, noting that "there was no malicious intent on her part".

"She was told to be more attentive and be ready to know that fake information and photos have practically become a norm on the Internet," Fedorov said, adding that there were no plans to sack the journalist. The screenshot was posted on the Euronews website on May 18.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made unflattering comments about work of the English language service of Euronews in comments on a screenshot of Russian foreign minister's nonexistent Twitter account, saying it was discrediting the entire news television channel.

"As an official Russian reaction to a resolution adopted by the regional council of the Italian region of Veneto, urging to recognize the de-facto status of Crimea and lift anti-Russian sanctions, the English language website of the TV channel posted 'a screenshot of Sergey Lavrov's Twitter account'," Zakharova wrote. "All is fine except for one thing - Sergey Lavrov has no Twitter account," she went on.

"This is not even propaganda, this is disinformation," the diplomat said.

"I used to think that such policy of the television channel's English language service was aimed against the Russian side, but no there is no doubt that it is a blow to Euronews from inside, discrediting activity of this media outlet," she said.

Last Wednesday, the regional council of Veneto approved by a majority of votes a resolution calling on the national government of Italy to recognize the status of Crimea and push for cancelation of sanctions imposed by the EU against Russia over the Ukrainian crisis.
