Four gunmen killed in special operation in North Caucasus

An active stage of a special operation in the settlement of Semender, a suburb in Russian North Caucasus' Dagestani capital of Makhachkala, where several gunmen were blocked at a house is over, the information centre of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK) told ITAR-TASS on Wednesday.

"Four bandits were killed in the Dagestani settlement of Semender in an anti-terrorist operation," the committee said.

Information about a gang preparing several terrorist acts at forthcoming May holidays was obtained earlier in the day.

"Notably, it was found that several participants of illegal armed units had entrenched at a private house in Khasavyurtovskaya Street in the settlement of Semender in Kirovsky district of the city of Makhachkala (the capital city of Dagestan)," the committee said.

NAK said the house was cordoned off by Federal Security Service and Interior Ministry special units. Residents nearby were evacuated to avoid casualties.

"NAK officers held negotiations with the militants and convinced them to release the wife of the house's owner," the statement said. "However, when asked to surrender, they opened fire on law enforcers, using automatic weapons."

"As a result of the ensuing rapid shootout, four militants were eliminated," the statement added, noting no civilian or special forces casualties and that the gunmen were being identified.

A representative of the operations headquarters in Dagestan said earlier in the day that the regime of an anti-terrorism operation was introduced in the Kirovsky district of Makhachkala where the special operation is on.
