Putin lauds Russia-Austria gas cooperation, joint Nord Stream-2 pipeline project

Russia and Austria are set to develop energy cooperation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after talks with his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer on Wednesday.

"We are set to build up energy interaction," the Russian leader said.

The year 2018 will mark 50 years since the start of gas deliveries from the Soviet Union to Austria, "which has become our first West European partner in this sphere," Putin said.

A total of more than 190 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas has been delivered to Austria over this time and "Russia has always been a reliable supplier of energy products," Putin said.

Last year, an agreement was reached between Russian energy giant Gazprom and Austria's OMV on the implementation of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project to pump natural gas across the Baltic Sea to Europe. The two companies also signed an agreement in 2015 on the joint development of the Urengoi oil and gas field in West Siberia, Putin said.

On April 1, Gazprom and OMV signed a package of new documents, including agreements on oil deliveries and scientific and technical cooperation, the Russian leader said.

"The creation of an underground gas storage facility in Austria, the second largest in Europe by the storage volume, is yet another landmark project with the participation of Gazprom Export," Putin said.
