Chinese military criticizes Japanese defense plans

China's military has accused Japan of using national security and regional peace as a pretext for military expansion.

The Japanese government approved its first national security strategy on Tuesday. Based on this strategy, it also adopted new defense program guidelines and a mid-term plan to build up its defense.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng says the three documents play up an alleged military threat from China, and aim to raise regional tensions. Geng said Japan claims to be a peace-loving country. But it has abandoned a policy of building a moderate self-defense force, and plans to purchase advanced armaments like surveillance drones and Aegis destroyers.

Geng says Japan has repeatedly denied its history of aggression during the Second World War and has maintained a "Cold War mentality". The defense ministry is urging Japan to undertake a deep introspection of its history.

Japan should honor its commitment to peaceful development, and try to improve its relations with Asian neighbors with concrete actions, and so play a constructive role in safeguarding regional peace and stability.
