Colbert: Trump's position on nukes 'like the Cold War all over again'

Stephen Colbert said President Trump's recent comments about the country's nuclear arsenal are reminiscent of the Cold War.

"But it's a terrifying prospect," Colbert said on CBS's "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Friday evening.

"After years, of carefully decommissioning our nukes - Obama won the Nobel Prize for that - Trump wants to ramp up nuclear production. It's like the Cold War all over again, but this time everyone's on Russia's side."

Colbert was referring to a recent interview with Trump published by Reuters on Friday, where the president said the United States would be "at the top of the pack" if countries continue to have nuclear weapons.

"I am the first one that would like to see ... nobody have nukes, but we're never going to fall behind any country even if it's a friendly country, we're never going to fall behind on nuclear power," Trump said in the interview.

"It would be wonderful, a dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, we're going to be at the top of the pack."

Colbert during his segment joked about the length of Trump's tenure, saying it "feels like 35 years" as opposed to 35 days.

"Not sure if he means top dog, or leader of the pack. But either way he is not the sharpest knife on the Christmas tree," Colbert said to laughs from the audience.
