7 security members killed by insurgents in Iraq

Five Kurdish security fighters and two Iraqi army soldiers were killed in two attacks by armed men in northern Iraq on Sunday, police said.

Unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint manned by fighters affiliated with Kurdish security force, known as Peshmerga, and shot dead five of them in a village near the city of Hawijah, some 50 km southwest of the city of Kirkuk, which itself located some 250 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The five victims were Arabs who are part of a multi-ethnic regiment comprised of Kurds, Arabs, Turkomans and others, tasked with providing security in the so-called disputed areas between the autonomous Kurdish region and the central government.

In a separate incident, gunmen attacked people swimming in Tigris River in the city of Shirqat, some 280 km north of Baghdad, and killed two people who appeared to be soldiers and wounded four others, two of whom were soldiers, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in five years, raising fears that the latest bloodshed is sliding the country back toward a full-blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.
