Britain to withdraw 3,800 troops from Afghanistan in 2013: PM

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday that the country will pull 3,800 troops out of Afghanistan in 2013.

The prime minister made the announcement at the House of Commons, while Defense Secretary Philip Hammond gave detailed statement about the situation in Afghanistan.

According to the plan, almost half of the current force serving in Helmand province in Southern Afghanistan are to be withdrawn from next year. Numbers would fall to 5,200 by the end of 2013, Cameron said.

British troops in Afghanistan are being reduced from 9,500 to 9,000 before Christmas.

The number of British military deaths now stands at 438 since the country began its operation in Afghanistan in 2001.

Britain has planned to withdraw most of its forces by the end of 2014.
