Afghanistan to sign security agreement with US on September 30

New President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, who was sworn in earlier on Monday, will sign on September 30 a security agreement with the United States, the US Embassy in Kabul reported.

According to the embassy, representatives of the US administration will take part in the signing ceremony due to take place at the presidential palace in Kabul on Tuesday morning, but did not disclose the names of the officials.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday that he would be unable to travel to Afghanistan since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was paying an official visit to Washington.

Ahmadzai earlier repeatedly stated that he intended to sign an agreement with the United States on the deployment of limited US military contingent in Afghanistan following Washington's withdrawal of its personnel.

Former Finance Minister Ahmadzai won the second round of the presidential election in Afghanistan earlier this year in a tight race with his only contender, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah.

However, Abdullah refused to recognize the outcome of the voting's second round on June 14 and demanded that the results be revoked allegedly due to mass violations at polling stations.

Abdullah also accused former President Khamid Karzai of facilitating the alleged ballot rigging in favor of Ahmadzai.
