South Ossetia foreign minister to discuss treaty on alliance with Russia in Moscow

South Ossetian Foreign Minister David Sanakoyev is due to visit Moscow in the coming week for discussing issues related to the draft treaty on alliance and integrity between the South Caucasian republic and Russia with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

During his meeting with Lavrov Sanakoyev plans to focus on bilateral relations, the situation in the Caucasian region, as well as NATO activities in Georgia, where the military alliance is putting up training bases and intends to carry out military exercises, Sanakoyev told reporters on Friday.

"All these developments pose a certain threat to stability in the region," Sanakoyev said. "We have to take relevant steps for stepping up security both in South Ossetia and in Russia."

"We are going to discuss several issues related to the draft treaty on alliance and integration. At present the Russian side is considering the draft treaty and in the near future we are expecting proposals from Moscow," the South Ossetian foreign minister said.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that a treaty on the state border would be signed in Moscow on February 18 when Sanakoyev was expected to visit Moscow at Lavrov's invitation.

"Prospects for the strengthening of friendly relationship between the two countries as well as pressing aspects of the situation in the South Caucasus and steps to ensure peace and security in that region will be in the spotlight of the talks," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "Russian and South Ossetian foreign ministers will outline the measures for improving inter-political interaction, including on the floor of Geneva discussions.".
