Putin says Chinese parliament speaker's visit is major step to prepare BRICS summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday the current visit to Russia by Chang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, is a major step in terms of preparations for a BRICS to be attended by China's President Xi Jinping.

"I would like to thank you for the fact that in the year of Russia's presidency in the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) you together with colleagues have actually opened a new format of cooperation within the BRICS - top-level inter-parliamentary ties ahead of the summits," Putin said addressing his words to Chang Dejiang.

The Russian president noted that the Chinese delegation had already met with Russia lawmakers from both houses of the Russian parliament in a new format. "These are very important steps on the path of preparations for the summit where we expect to see our big friend and my personal friend, China's President Xi Jinping," Putin said.

Chang Dejiang, in turn, conveyed greetings and good wished to the Russian president from the Chinese leader and said that one of the aims of his visit to Russia was to perfect the mechanism of inter-parliamentary contacts. He said the first session of the inter-parliamentary commission had been held successfully and thanked the Russian leader for his telegram of condolences of the recent ship wreck in China.

"We see very profound sympathy on the part of the Russian president and people to the Chinese people and we are thankful to you for that," Chang Dejiang said. He also congratulated Putin on successful organization of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the victory in World War II.
